1) Policy

– Waste disposal management shall be taken special note to prevent hospital infection.

– Infections wastes shall be managed, stored strictly and burned by a incinerator located at hospital site.

 

2) Waste Disposal Plan

  1. a)Classification

– Medical wastes in hospital are classified as follows;

 

Infections Waste Specially-controlled waste Organ, needle, etc.
Industrial waste Rubber gloves, etc.

  1. b) Infections Waste Disposal

– Segregation: Infections waste disposal shall be segregated appropriately and packed in particular containers and delivered to particular storage. The segregation, packing and delivery shall be operated appropriately at each room such as outpatient, operation theater, blood collection room and dialysis room.

– Precaution: Infections waste shall not be place in other containers on the way of segregation, packing and delivery.

– Storage: Infections waste shall be stored at the storage in hospital site temporarily until infections waste is incinerated.

– Incinerator:

 

It is designed to sterilize medical waste , reduce its volume , and render its components unrecognizable all in one fully enclosed and automated system.

It combines direct heated steam , high pressure and shredding to treat infectious materials.

The contaminated waste is loaded into the upper stainless steel chamber where a heavy-duty shredder reduces the waste into small pieces. Using gravity, the processed material falls into the treatment chamber where every piece is steam heated to 134 and pressurized to 3 to bar for 20 minutes. The operating conditions are continuously monitored and validated to achieve complete sterilization.

The 60 minutes average duration process cycle is totally automated. A computerized system monitors the process and automatically prints a report with the essential sterilizing parameters at the end of the cycle for accurate record keeping.

The capacity is between 500 to 600 kg/cy.h or more.

Treatment cycle:

1- Loading ; the contaminated waste is automatically -loaded into the chamber of the unit

2-Shredding; the heavy-duty shredder cut the material into small pieces and features a unique reversing system to avoid jamming

3-Heat; saturated pressurized steam raises the temperature to 134 C and the pressure to 3 bar

4-Sterilization; the sterilization comes into direct contact with the shredding material (134 c , 3 bar) for 20 minutes

5-Cooling; temperature is lowered to 80 C by spraying cool water onto Double jacket of the treatment vessel, simultaneously, the unit returns to ambient pressure

6-Draining; the steam is condensed to water and discharged with the cooling water to the sanitary sewer system

7-vacuum; the remaining residual steam is vented out through a vacuum pump

8-Unloading; a digital signal informs the operator that all safe operating conditions have been met

The condition unlocks the unit and allows gravity unloading of the treated waste into a container

e-    Flexible wire control linkages to bring under fire air, overfire air and burner slide plate control to front of

incinerator.

 

f-    One fire protection system, comprising fusible links over burners, deadweight fire valve, electrically

interlocked with incinerator controls.

 

g-    Special feeding door with thermal lock to protect the operator from accident.

  1. The incinerator shall consist of a low temperature carbonizing changer (primary chamber) in which the waste

components are converted into gas by heat which is produced through incomplete combustion as the result of a deficiency

of air, and a gas reactor (thermal reactor) in which the gas is burned with a controlled excess of air.

and the inlet of the chimney. This ductwork shall consist of refractory lined tubes and high temperature resistant

2.5  ACCESS DOORS

 

  1. These shall be hinged from the front plate of the primary combustion chamber and shall comprise

 

1-    A full width access/de-ashing door normally retained in the closed position by two handwheel clamps.

 

2-    A smaller waste charging door hinged from and located in the main door. This door shall have a minimum of 500

  1. x 500 mm. aperture and be normally retained in the closed position by means of quick release latch.

 

  1. A viewing port, so constructed that the observation/protective glass is capable of being cleaned whilst the

incinerator is in operation, and located in the waste charging door, to allow the operator to safely observe the

progress of combustion.

 

  1. Each door shall be fabricated from mild steel and be internally lined to the same standards as the combustion

chambers.

 

2.6  BURNERS AND BURNER CONTROLS

 

  1. A single burner, suitable for operation on fuel oil shall be mounted on each combustion chamber.

2.2  PRIMARY CHAMBER

 

  1. The chamber shall consists of a welded steel shell of minimum 6mm thickness plate reinforcing strips and

connections for primary air supply, start-up burner, thermal reactor, water injection and all necessary measuring probe

sockets.

 

  1. The entire chamber, including all the connections shall be lined with a composition of castable hot face

refractory suitable for a continuous service temperature of 1500 deg. C. This lining shall be separated from the steel

construction by a second layer of insulation. Heat resistant cast steel plates with many fine holes shall be lied over

the refractory lined floor of the unit with a space between the two.

 

  1. The chamber shall be externally primed and sprayed with a silicone enamel paint.

 

2.3  THERMAL REACTOR

 

  1. The reactor shall consist of welded cylindrical steel sections of minimum 9.5mm thickness plate.

 

  1. The whole chamber shall internally be constructed with a refractory lining.

 

  1. The chamber shall be provided with connection for the low temperature carbonization gas intake, the flue gas

outlet, the secondary and tertiary air supply, the reactor burner and all the required measuring probes.

 

  1. Externally the reactor shall be primed and sprayed with a silicone enamel paint.
